Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, hair, nails. It is a unique specialty with both medical and surgical aspects, and one that includes patients of all ages. Dermatologists are trained in internal medicine prior to completing a specific residency in dermatology. Additionally, dermatologists are trained to provide an array of specialized cosmetic procedures.
Dermatopathology is a subspecialty of dermatology. It requires an additional year of specialized study in addition to the training received in a dermatology residency. Dermatopathologists interpret biopsies taken from the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes. Dermatologists trained as dermatopathologists are especially poised to provide clinical-pathological correlation to especially challenging diseases, ultimately benefiting patient care.
