General Discussion Arthritis in the joints of the foot and ankle can be caused by bacterial infections, viral infections and other infectious agents. The most common cause of isolated joint infection of the foot or ankle is due to a puncture wound into the joint. Joint infections can also result from blood transmission of the infective agent into a joint. Certain viral infections can cause temporary joint stiffness and soreness. Two uncommon causes of infective arthritis are gonococcal arthritis and tuberculosis arthritis. Infective arthritis can be a devastating condition particularly if caused by bacteria. In the event of a puncture wound the patient should consult a physician if any signs of swelling, redness or drainage at the site of the puncture wound occurs.
