Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder

Text

Calcific tendinitis is a common condition. It happens when calcium builds up in the rotator cuff. This causes swelling and pain, especially when lifting the arm. There is no specific cause of calcific tendinitis. But the wear and tear of aging seems to play a role.

Treatment includes medication, cortisone shots and physical therapy. Doctors can also use ultrasound imaging to find and break up the deposits. In severe cases, surgery may be needed.
