What is radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas that you can’t see or smell. It occurs naturally in the environment and can be harmful.

Know the risks

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Because radon can’t be seen, you may not even know if it is in your home. But exposure to radon can be prevented. The EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General advise you test your home for radon.

What can you do?

  1. Test your home. There are kits available, making it easy and affordable to do.
  2. Attend an event to learn more. Look for radon events in your community during the month of January.
  3. Share what you know. Encourage others to test and learn more.
  4. Research radon-resistant homes. If you’re looking to buy a home, this could be an option.
